Well after a discussion with the group we have submitted an application for the challenge.  If not accepted we will continue with original agenda on a earlier weekend

How realistic is this trip for a novice driver in a stock vehicle?

Stock how?  As for Jeeps...a stock Rubicon will probably be fine.  Lift is nice with at least 32" tires.  Lockers are helpful.
Toyotas I can't say...but I think most are good to go.  More ground clearance is always preferred and a locker at least in the front can be very helpful.  A winch is always welcome equipment.
Many of the trails can be tight and brush will cause scratches...just so you know.

Sorry, I thought my vehicle description was in my signature. I have a Xterra Pro4X. Ground clearance and tires are decent (as far as I know as a prospective rookie overlander). It also has skid plates and a rear locker. There is a tow hook on the front and I'd probably get a shackle for the tow hitch. Everything is stock from the dealership.

The idea of pinstripes doesn't bother me too much (as long as it's from the trail). I figure that's just part of the game. Thanks for the feedback.

The lottery for the challenge is after the 1st.  So we're stalemate on decision making right now.  But once we do I'll let you guys know.

I'm not sure how big of a group the trail allows or really where I'm going, other then a gpx file and some good words, but we are not shy and you guys are welcomed to join and try it with us.

As for the xterra, Some recovery points and extended breather lines may be warranted with the fording areas.

I don't have 31 or 32 inch tires. So if that is a disqualifying fact just let me know.

I'm assuming the front tire hook and a shake on the rear tow hitch will be enough for recovery points?

Also, by extended breather, do you mean a snorkel? Would you say that's a requirement?

Those recovery points will be okay.
As far as extended breathers...this means to extend the breather tubes from axle vents.  Many place the ends above a potential water line for creek crossing.  You don't want to purposely get water into the diffs.
