Ok everyone, post 1 thread/topic per day. Make it a daily task. It's dead around here.

So ...

Sold my Jeep
Sold my other Jeep
Sold my Chevy

Bought a Ford
Bought a Lexus

Really getting the urge to get out there in a non-competitive manner. I haven't camped or been "overlanding" since New Years Eve in Big Bend roughly 2-3 years ago.

Vehicle Modification and Creation / Patches

I haven't been around here in a while. Lots of life changes, too many to list, but to distill it down to a small list:

Sold my Jeep
Bought a house
Bought an old Jeep

I shouldn't have bought it but I guess I watched too many youtube videos. Roadkill, Dirt Every Day, etc. where they get it running. I did get the thing running, but the transmission was full of water and locked up.

I decided to just do an engine swap and instead of putting money into a 4-speed 4-banger.

The more I tore into it, the more shit I found wrong with it.

I suck at welding. I did have metal shop in high school, but I think that was the same year this Jeep was made. Should be good enough.

Took it down pretty far.

Rattle-canned the frame

Fuel system partly done

Now the fun starts

Need to make new trans line

Square peg, round hole stuff

It's getting to that point where everything is just tedious. I probably won't get much done once the temps are unbearable. My goal is to be breaking axles and stuff this fall.

I keep thinking I want a new truck. The 2015 Ford is very appealing to me for some reason. Until I priced one on their website that is. Holy bleep. You can hit 50K quick on the build tool.

I really have no point with this post, other than to gripe about prices. Get off my lawn.

General Modification / Tire Balancing Beads
« on: December 07, 2014, 11:29:50 AM »
Trying this again, last time I posted this the server appeared to rollback and lost my post.

I have this one tire that's kinda iffy on the balance. NTB gave up on the dynamic balancing machine and static balanced it. That improved it a lot, but I guess I want to have everything. :)

Reports seem kinda hit or miss with tire beads. I see reports that are glowing and others say they didn't help or made it worse.

Obviously if you have a bad wheel or tire out of round, nothing is going to fix that, I think maybe some of the bad reviews are from that.

Curious what the people here say.

Any interest? I was thinking maybe The kiamichi or hill country routes.

The weather is getting nice and I'm ready to get out there.

Tavern / 2004 4Runner

So my wife sold her truck and has been driving my "niner" for a while. We got some bills paid off and what not and now she is wanting a new vehicle.

She has found an '04 4Runner Limited with V8 and AWD that she is having transferred to the local Carmax. It looks pretty nice on paper.

I am not really a Toyota guy, but was wondering if anyone here could say anything good or bad about the 4Runner.

I was trying to get Jayston to work on my trailer for me, but he wisely turned me down. :) It took me 4-5 hours just to slap this thing on the lid! It is pretty good sized though and I didn't have any help.

It'll work fine like this for any trips coming up this fall. Eventually I will get some kind of better system fabbed up so I can raise it up higher off the ground to use the annex and the awning I have for the other side.

Vehicle Modification and Creation / ODW

ODW == Overlanding Defense Weapon

So lately I've been thinking something more powerful than a pistol would be nice to have in the Jeep when wheeling through Meth territory.

After evaluating a number of ideas, I ended up with this:

It's a Rock River LAR-15 pistol. It has a 7.5" barrel which makes it super portable compared to my 16" carbine. I can keep this within arms reach pretty easily in the jeep, and because it's so short I can maneuver it in the jeep pretty easily.

The Build:

I bought it off the shelf on a whim, but have made the following upgrades

Ambi safety (I'm a lefty)
BCM ambi charging handle
Magpul ASAP end plate/sling swivel
Magpul MS3 sling
Magpul BAD lever
Palmetto State Armory premium BCG
Trijicon RMR 7.0 MOA amber dot
Geissele SD3G trigger (I'm spoiled, can't shoot anything else)
